Margaret River is one of Australia’s best known and most beautiful wine regions. Not only can you find some incredible wine here, but the region also has some of the most beautiful beaches and landscapes that Australia has to offer. Here is your Margaret River Ultimate Travel Guide.
HOW TO GET THERE
Margaret River is located approximately 3 hours south of Perth. The best way to get there is by driving from Perth, its a very easy drive along the highway most of the way. If you’re driving make sure to check out 2 beautiful locations, Black Diamond Lake & Busselton along the way. Alternatively if driving isn’t your thing you could also catch a bus or a train.
BEST TIME TO GO
Margaret River has a very mild temperature range, during the summer you’ll get hot days and cooler nights and through winter you’ll find colder temperatures but still pretty mild weather. The best time of year to go to Margaret River really depends on what you want to do while you’re there. If you’re going for wine tasting then there is no wrong time to go. For warm sunny weather great for the beach, the summer months are the best anywhere from October to April. To avoid crowds stay away during school holidays which range from mid December & January.
WHAT TO SEE
CELLAR DOORS / WINERIES
Margaret river is best known for its wine, particularly red wine. While the wine region is generally known as Margaret River, it’s actually a very spread out area and you can find wineries anywhere from Eagle Bay to Cowaramup to Margaret River. My favourite wineries are around the Cowaramup area where the cellar doors are located much closer together compared to the other areas that are much more spread apart. There are so many wineries in the area it’s hard knowing where to start and which ones to spend your time at. My favourite wineries are as follows:
Wise Vineyard – This is the only cellar door in the area that features an ocean view and is my favourite in the area.
Swings & Roundabouts
House Of Cards
But of course, don’t just take my word for it. Go out and explore as many wineries as you can. Just make sure you have a designated driver or take a wine tour.
INDIJUP NATURAL SPA
The Indijup Natural Spa is a must see when in Margaret River. This is a natural rock pool that fills up as the waves crash in over the rocks and as the water comes down over the rocks it bubbles just like in a hot tub. Visit this at high tide for the pools to be full which you can swim in and enjoy the natural spa. Take note that this location can get very busy on hot sunny days so go first thing in the morning or in the evening for sunset to avoid crowds.
There are so many beaches scattered along the west coast of Margaret River, however most of them are for surfing. If a swimming beach is what you’re looking for, some of my favourite beaches in all of Australia are in the Dunsborough area. Make sure you go to Castle Rock Beach, Meelup Beach, and Eagle Bay. Also if you are in Dunsborough from September to December keep your eyes open for a possible whale sighting, this is the time of year that they’re migrating. The best beaches for sunset are any along the west coast.
Another thing that Margaret River is well known for is the craft breweries. There are a number of breweries in the area, my favourites are Cheeky Monkey Brewery, Eagle Bay Brewing Co, and Brewhouse Margaret River. The Brewhouse is more of a bar so it’s great for a drink in the evening. The Margaret River Chocolate Co is a must see if you’re a chocolate lover. The Margaret River Dairy Company has samples of some delicious local cheeses. And my favourite in the area is Eagle Bay Olives for some delicious local olives & preserves (and they also have the cutest donkeys at the entrance).
